Welfare Citizenship and Intersectional Feminism

Dr Saima Nasar at the University of Bristol was awarded a Leverhulme Trust ‘Research Leadership Award for her project titled: ‘Welfare Citizenship and Intersectional Feminism in Britain, 1940-2000’. The project began in 2023 and will run until 2028.

The project foregrounds intersectional feminist responses to welfare disparities that impact Black and South Asian women. It draws together relevant public and private archives, oral history testimony, and transcontinental research material. In doing so, it offers important new insights into how both the welfare state and intersectional feminist activism have approached structural welfare inequalities and ultimately shaped welfare citizenship (see ‘About the Project’ for more details).

Dr Nasar will be working with a project team in order to explore the transnational connections and networks of women’s activism.
